A thankless job you toil through
Day in, Day out below the blue
No thanks from folks along the street
No open arms or hugs that greet
But tirelessly continuing on
Working from the dusk until the dawn
For countless days, months on end
Our freedoms from below they defend
Tall or short they are burrowed in
Locked inside a metal skin
Long at last to the surface the rise
A hero in so many eyes
So soon again the world rushes along
and down into the below they go on
Some I care about have served there too
Protecting freedom from under the blue.
