todd55devoe's blog: "american idol"

created on 07/10/2007  |  http://fubar.com/american-idol/b100810

Does anyone actually care who wins American Idol 2007? I know I sure don't. 2007 has to be the most disappointing series to date. Neither of our two finalists have stood out as other Idol winners have done over the last 6 years.

Firstly, Blake Lewis has made it due to his trademark beatboxing. The novelty of this wore off somewhere a few weeks ago where every single song had to be beat boxed in when it clearly didn't work. Seriously, what was he thinking. The boy can sing, yes, but he's pretty ordinary.

Now for everybody's sweetheart, the seventeen year old Jordin Sparks. I am so tired of being told how old she is. Are they secretly trying to convince me that being so young justifies her struggling voice? Hardcore fans, mock me if you must, but she has struggled to be pitch perfect every single week of this competition. I don't even find her that attractive so I'm lost as to why people love her so much.

Perhaps someone wants to say 2007 has been so crap no thanks to VoteForTheWorst.com and Howard Stern? Give me a break! VFTW has about as much impact on the results as the stylists do on Simon Cowell. VFTW has NEVER managed to take their 'favourite' to the end of the competition and have to change every couple of weeks when they fail to successfully impact the results their way.

When you look at the traffic comparisons between VFTW and the official site, seriously, the numbers that actually visit VFTW simply don't justify the weight they claim to have. On a show where the voting numbers are generally over 30 million, and in some cases up to 60 million votes in a single show, VFTW have had a misely couple of million visitors over the entire three years that they've been running. If it is indeed a voting block, it's a pretty small one.

And now that they're claiming to back Blake? Year one they ended up backing Carrie Underwood. Year two, it was Taylor Hicks. This year, they'll get it wrong and everyone will see what a farce they actually are and what little impact they have on the show.

I think the biggest problem this year is the crap talent that the judges put through. It may not even have been about quality singers either. There was no one with any personality - with the exception of Sanjaya Malakar perhaps.

In any case, they were all pretty much boring, boring, boring in 2007 and thus the reason why the viewing numbers have been down as well as the number of votes cast. The only thing left for Idol in 2007 is to have one massive shindig at the end and invite a whole heap of celebs and star to celebrate the fact the show is finally over and we can start the countdown to 2008 where hopefully they find some decent performers.

Am I being too tough? I don't think so. This has seriously become so disappointing to watch this year. No one has stood up on that stage and owned it, despite my many requests. It's as if none of them really care about winning and they're just there for the experience before they go back to working at McDonalds or somewhere else less inspiring.

I can't imagine the Grand Finale is going to bring anything more exciting from these contestants as they have done nothing to really earn a vote this year and since nothing they do on the big night will put them any closer to the prize, what will they care?

Perhaps Michael Jackson will turn up and perform. That would certainly give 2007 at least one memorable moment for American Idol. What do you think?
