A dirt road
a woman walking
with a basket on her head
A field
a woman walking
with a bushel on her back
A city street
a woman walking
with a briefcase
A parking lot
a woman walking
with a grocery bag
A suburban mall
a woman walking
with a stroller
Suddenly
heavy footsteps behind her
Her heart beats quicker
A robber, a rapist
a harasser, a killer?
Perhaps just a nice person?
But she's afraid
The sound
of a stranger's footsteps
is a universal
female experience
of fear
The dictionary says that "progress" means "steady improvement." But is it an improvement that everything goes faster today? To me, real progress would be healthy, well-fed children and adults worldwide, living and loving in peace.
Most of us after having
spent many years
working to live
Spend many more years
living to work
And when finally
there is no more work
we don't know how to live
Always start the next thing before
you're finished with the last because...
if you wait to be finished with
"have to"
you will never get to
"want to"
and there's even less chance of getting to
"hope to"
The secret of longevity is
when you have learned
what to do and
how to do it well
then look for new things
to learn
knowing that at first
you may not do them well
