I recently watched "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".
Now,I've only read maybe 2 of Hunter S. Thompsons works mind you. I saw this movie years ago with some friends. You know the deal, Friends,pizza,smoke,beer and other fun condiments.
So over the weekend I was bored (like I usually am) and decided to re-rent the movie.
Yes the scenes with the drugs were amusing as I can fully relate to mescaline,Ether and acid.
But the undertone to the movie is what got me...how in the 60's,as with today,we do drugs to escape the realities of American life surrounding them.
Hunter also said that the mid 60's in San Francisco was a somewhat of a magical time. I can somewhat relate, on a much smaller scale. The mid to late 80's in NYC for me, was like wow,man. The Art scene was popping,nightclubs were fantastic places to be seen,to dance,etc. And yes,I was ingesting as much drugs back then as humanely possible. Not that I thought if I did some(or alot) I'd have some deep insight or keep my finger on the pulse of what's happening...it just was fun. And I suppose it too was a way of keeping me from not thinking.
It's also amusing to watch Raoul and Dr.Gonzo, degrade, abuse, and destroy symbols of American consumerism and excess.
At one time I was asked if I wanted to goto Las Vegas. My prompt answer was,no. Watching elderly people piss away social security checks or Dad gambling away jr's college fund isn't my idea of a fun time. Or to be surrounded by drunken college kids,silicon injected bimbo's and so on. And also keep in mind that the Casino's aren't in the business to give away money.
Getting back to the movie, I loved it. I rarely if ever rave about movies. I usually watch them to piss away the time.
