Spirit Quest
I've gone from sweatlodge
To this place alone
Smoking sweetgrass fresh in my nose
Two days and nights of heat and cold
The pains in my belly grow
I cannot eat though hunger calls
A cry from my heart
A chant from my soul
Manitou hear my call
I wait
Two days and nights I've run
The pack left far behind
I do not hunt and I grow weak
Must find that which I seek
I feel the pull and feel the hunger
To the wind I howl my anger
I pass the rabbit and the doe
They are not what I must hunt
I smell and my muzzle quivers
I hear and my ears perk up
My small fire casts little light
I am weakened and the dark closes in
The night sounds surround me
I hear the cry of owl
But he's speaks not to me
I hear bear as he humphsand grumbles
But his sounds are not meant for me
On the edge of darkness I see the eyes
I hear the low throaty growl
A gray wolf has come and spoken
And slowly approaches me
The smell of the two leg brings comfort
My tail begins to sway
Will he know this sign of friendship
Can he speak the tongue of the people
I smell no fear and see no anger
No flash of steel or sound of thunder
The fire flower small, causes no fear
I approach, I want to get near
I feel his hunger as great as my own
I know his need for it is mine
The gray wolf comes closer
Within striking distance he stops
Like me he hungers, am I his prey
I see his tail and how it sways
This is how young cubs they play
I reach out and touch his pelt
Feels as though I'm touching me
I feel his hunger and the need to hunt
I know the odors he smells
For he is me as I am he
The word he spoke was Brother.
