St Valentines Day,the day of love celebrated the world over. It is the day when lovers can at last declare undying love and perform the age old rituals of courtship and marriage.
This ancient feast of love is shrouded in mystery,some believing it originated in the pagan festivities celebrating fertility and honored Juno,the Roman Goddess of Love and Marriage.
The women would write love letters and place them in a large urn.The men would draw a letter from the urn and pursue the lady who wrote the letter.
People also believed that the birds and the bees began their mating rituals on February 14.
Christians believe that St Valentines was a Roman dignitary who secretly practiced Christianity in the 3rd Century,he is said to have performed marriages against the wishes of Emperor Claudius,who believed single soldiers performed Better in battle.
Valentine was Jailed and before his Execution he sent a letter to a friend,the Jailers daughters signed "from your valentine".
This Phrase is still used in todays cards.
