I hate Stephen King movies. They don't translate well to the big screen, and other than The Green Mile and Running Man, I have very little use for them.
But the boy wanted to rent The Mist, and I was curious, so we did. And let me tell you, it wasn't bad.
No huge stars filled the screen. There are recognizable people, but no huge star. The Sherminator from American Pie fame is probably the most recognizable to me.
But the basic premise is a huge electrical storm happens, and tears up the town, and the next day a stange mist starts rolling in from the mountains.
Since the storm knocked out power, everyone is in town, and goes to the store. While there, the mist really rolls in, an old man comes in screaming that something from the mist grabbed someone, and the fun begins.
What occurs after this is part Lord of the Flies, part Jesus TV, and part Starship Troopers. And surprisingly, it all works for me.
There was some overacting. The special effects was average at best. And some of their reactions were weak.
But the set was good. The story was great(I read the short story, one of my favorites). I thought the acting wasn't bad, if anything, their reactions were underwhelming. I'd have been way more freaked out.
One complaint I have is that they seem to film most his stories like they are for TV, very bright, very shiny, and I don't get that. I'd like to see one of his stories filmed less crisp, sort of dark. Maybe that is just me.
But overall, I enjoyed it. But for an odd, but necessary twist, I will give two ratings for this movie.
If you read the story, the ending in the book was much better I think. So imagine my shock when it ended the way it did. I thought very disturbing, and very good if I hadn't read the book. But I like the book ending better, so if you read it...7 out of 10.
If you didn't read the story, then the ending is a home run, because you don't expect it. And its disturbing, and I haven't quit thinking about it for 3 days. I give it an 8.5 out of 10 if you hadn't read it.
