The New Orleans Photo Alliance is pleased to present “TOY STORIES: HI-BROW PHOTOS FROM LOW-FI CAMERAS,” an exhibition of 36 images that represent the world as seen by photographers using toy and homemade cameras with their inherent light leaks, fuzzy edges, and quirky perspectives. “Toy Stories” will be on view from February 16, 2008 until April 1, 2008 at the New Orleans Photo Alliance Gallery, 1111 St. Mary Street.
Susan Burnstine, the Los Angeles-based photographer who served as juror for “Toy Stories,” says she “selected images that transcended the medium and would be considered strong regardless of process. Warren Harold's pinhole images made from a diapers box were not only highly ambitious but achieved a unique and surreal beauty that could not be denied. The epic, moody imagery of Rosanna Salonia endlessly inspired, and the haunting toy camera work of Matthew Yates transformed what might have been a really good shot into something visionary through his exceptional alternative processing.”
Ms. Burnstine was the winner of B&W Magazine’s Excellence Award for 2006 Portfolio Contest and a 2007 Aperture Book Prize nominee. She is a contributing writer for Black & White Photography Magazine, and her highly regarded series, “On Waking Dreams,” was photographed using homemade cameras and lenses.
Juror’s prizes for “Toy Stories” Best in Show (awarded to Matthew Yates) and two honorable mentions (awarded to Warren Harold and Rosanna Salonia) were generously donated by Lensbabies, manufacturer of selective focus SLR lenses.
The New Orleans Photo Alliance is a not-for-profit group of photographers whose mission is to encourage the understanding and appreciation of photography through exhibitions, opportunities and educational programs. Gallery hours are Fridays, 3 - 6 p.m. and Saturdays, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. or by appointment
